tough mudder

tough mudderThe time of year when the weather gets better always brings with it a lot of fitness events, but not all events are created equal! There are some that you really shouldn’t miss.

We’ve put together our top 3 upcoming events that provide great challenges and a whole lot of fun (check out the Tough Mudder pic to the right! That could be you!).

1. Tough Mudder

Not for the faint hearted! This adventure event created by a former British Special Forces counter-terrorism agent is landing in New Zealand for the first time next year. All participants, ‘Mudders’, grind out a 20 kilometer course littered with obstacles including mud fire, ice water, a greasy quarter pipe, and live electrical wires. Rather than being a race, it is a challenge designed to test all-around strength, stamina, mental grit and teamwork. In the past, more than a million participants across three continents have completed the challenge.

Dates:
Auckland, 26-27 April 2014 (more details available closer to the event date)

2. The Colour Run

Founded in January 2012, The Colour Run is an event to promote healthiness and happiness by bringing the community together to participate in the ‘Happiest 5k on the Planet’. Now the single largest event series in the United States, this bright and colourful event is hosted in more than 30 countries. It’s a 5 kilometer, un-timed race in which the ‘Colour Runners’ (you) are doused from head to toe in different colours at each kilometer. The only two rules are:

– Wear white at the starting line
– Finish plastered in colour!

Dates:
Auckland, 26 January 2014
Christchurch, 23 February 2014
Wellington, 30 March 2014

3. Run For Your Freak’n Life

How do you make your heartrate go through the roof? Do an obstacle run and add zombies. Run For Your Freak’n Life is a 5km obstacle run where you will be given a flag belt; just like the childhood game of flag football. These flags represent your vigour – something the zombies want to take (along with your brains). If you lose all your vigour flags, you die and the zombies win. If you can’t complete an obstacle you must surrender one of your flags.

Held at Auckland’s Spookers Haunted Attraction Scream Park , Spookers is located in the grounds of the old Kingseat Psychiatric Hospital which is a fascinating location with an intriguing history. The 5km course will include parts of the Kingseat grounds, Spookers Freaky Forest, and areas of neglected zombie infested paddocks and scrub.

Dates:
Auckland (Spookers), 10 May 2014 (1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm start times)
