New Year; same resolutions?

Many of us make New Year’s resolutions, and while our aspirational goals often make it to around the 3-4 week mark, they have a tendendcy to hit a rut and by January 1 the next year we find ourselves making those same New Year’s resolutions all over again. Sound like you? We have a checklist to help you revamp your New Year’s resolutions.

Focus on what’s important

Why is it that you want to achieve this goal? Do you keep making the same resolutions each year? If so, they must be important to you in some way.  If you find yourself going off track, this is what you should remind yourself and it will help pull you back into line!

Keep it simple

Don’t make a huge list of things you want to change; make one or two key resolutions to focus on and you’ll be more likely to achieve them. Also, make sure your resolutions are achievable and realistic (i.e. don’t aim to lose 10 kilos in two weeks!). If you make goals you’ll actually be able to do, you won’t be disappointed with progress or feel inclined to give up.

Break it down

It’s okay to have big long-term goals, but if that’s the case, try breaking it down into smaller goals to make it more achievable. For example, if you want to travel, one mini goal could be to do your research and find out where you want to go and stay and how much it will cost. Another goal could be to save up a specific amount to pay for your trip.

Reward yourself along the way

Now we don’t mean get yourself a slice of cake for doing a fantastic workout! For each of your key goals, think up some rewards you can give yourself that will help motivate you. For example, if you lose 5 kgs, buy a new dress. If you manage to quit smoking for a month, treat yourself to a trip to the movies.
